Do you remember our first busting buzzwords article from a few weeks ago? We really enjoyed talking about it and think that many of you may have found it helpful to break unnecessary words down. So we’re doing the same thing again this week – however this time we’re talking about algorithms. Everyone who claims to know about SEO is bound to have dropped this word around at least 50 times in one SEO conversation. But what on earth does it mean and why does it even matter?
What is an algorithm?
An algorithm is the system and/or program that dictates the order in which search results, posts and feeds appear. A common misconception is that algorithms only exist in search engines. This is because the most talked about algorithm in the SEO world is usually Google’s. However in recent years, social media platforms have strayed away from showing things in chronological order in favour of using an algorithm. For example Instagram shows you posts in an order that it thinks you’ll like based on you past likes and comments, Facebook also does something similar now too. So to break it down into basic terms the algorithm is just the machine behind a search engine or social network that dictates the order of how things appear.
Why are algorithms important to my SME?
The biggest reason why your SME should keep up with and care about algorithms is because algorithms dictate your exposure online. Therefore, you can cater your digital marketing campaigns to the algorithms requirements and gain more exposure. However, if you completely disregard algorithms and how they work then you’re not going to be making the most of you online marketing.
How can I use it in my day-to-day business?
Firstly, you need to learn about algorithms – how does each one work, what are each ones requirements for appearing at the top, and how can you fulfill these requirements? It’s important to note that algorithms are always changing to keep up with consumers and give them the best experience. So you need to keep on top of the latest news and the latest updates. Luckily, there are plenty so SEO blogs out there that can send you out daily news alerts about algorithm updates from search engines and social platforms. So it’s worth following a couple of those. Once you’ve stocked up you algorithm knowledge bank, it’s time to apply it to your marketing campaigns. When a new update comes out – alter you campaigns to align with the new requirements. You’ll be suprised by how much exposure you gain from adhering the new algorithm updates quickly.
